Inburgering – old or new system?

What does the difference with the new inburgering system (Wet Inburgering 2021) mean for me? If you are an immigrant to the Netherlands and are looking to learn Dutch and integrate into Dutch society, you may have heard of the Wet Inburgering or Integration Act. The Wet Inburgering was first introduced in 2007 and has undergone several changes over the years, with the latest version being the Wet Inburgering 2021.

One of the main differences between the Wet Inburgering 2013 and the Wet Inburgering 2021 is the way in which the language courses are financed. Under the old system, inburgeraars (people who are required to integrate) were able to apply for a DUO loan to finance their language courses. However, under the new system, the gemeente (municipality) is responsible for financing the integration process, including language courses.

Another significant difference between the two systems is the way in which the integration process is structured. Under the old system, inburgeraars had more flexibility in terms of the language courses they could take, as long as they reached the required level of language proficiency. However, under the new system, the gemeente determines the language course that inburgeraars must take, based on their individual needs and abilities.

Furthermore, under the Wet Inburgering 2021, inburgeraars are required to follow the B1 route, which is a more extensive and intensive language course compared to the old system. The B1 route is designed to ensure that inburgeraars have a better command of the Dutch language and are better equipped to integrate into Dutch society. The exams will be held at B1 instead of at the A2 level under the new system.

Overall, while both systems aim to promote integration and language proficiency among immigrants, the Wet Inburgering 2021 places a greater emphasis on integration and ensures that inburgeraars receive the support and resources they need to successfully integrate into Dutch society. So if you are a new inburgeraar, it is important to be aware of the differences.
